Niche or Ideal Client? What’s the Difference?
If you haven’t taken the time to sit down and think through your niche or ideal client, and specifically define it, then narrow it down to your ideal client, I’m afraid your business operations will suffer, especially where your client and customer experience is concerned.

Unless you understand and relationally know WHO YOU SERVE, then your services, your expertise is wasted if it’s falling on ears that don’t get it, won’t take the time to learn it, or fail to execute what you deliver.
Simply put, the difference between a niche and an ideal client is the space between them.
The niche identifies the market you are pursuing – a group of people with similar interests, common threads, and similar pain points.
For example, my niche includes women who are executive, leadership, career and life coaches who are hiring their first or next hire.
This niche lets you know that I am targeting women, not men and that I am not pursing yoga instructors, online product entrepreneurs, or course creators, and that I am looking for those who are consider themselves established to mid-level because they are getting ready to grow in some capacity.
My ideal client is the ONE person I “talk” to when I think about responding to a question online, or record a podcast. It’s the fictional person I create that best fits that niche. So not only is she a leadership coach, she has a name: Sophie. I know exactly how long she’s been in business, the kind of wine she drinks and how old her kids are. She’s shared where she lives, her education level and her favorite movies and books.
I know what kind of business she runs and what her top ten pain points are, her MBTI, and her strengths and weaknesses.
I know as much as I possibly can about her.
That’s it. The difference doesn’t have to get more complicated than that.
Want to share your niche or learn more about your ideal client? I’d love to hear from you.
And remember, unless your niche identified, you’ll try to reach anybody, spend money on everybody, reach nobody, because you couldn’t identify your somebody.
