frustratedGetting unstuck is so frustrating. I know what that’s like all too well. Having all the great things in place – the mission, vision, and values, the ideal client, the operational strategies – having it all in place, then sitting back and holding your breath that the clients will pour in.

Or maybe, you’ve got the clientele but you feel yourself being pulled in a different direction and you don’t want to abandon what you’ve worked so hard for but you also don’t want miss out on an opportunity that is an obvious calling.

Or maybe you’re watching everyone around you, doing half visible work but exploding in their business and imposter syndrome is no longer a buzzword, but a reality.

No matter why you’re feeling stuck, it’s a miserable feeling and I want you to know you are not alone.  

I want to take a few minutes and explain why it might be time for a sabbatical from the experts.

It’s Time for an Expert Sabbatical

Ask yourself if it’s time to take a break from chasing expert advice for a day or a week or as long as you need to, to shake the anxious feeling that you are not doing “it” right.

Experts offer great advice, direction and guidance on their area of expertise because it’s what made them successful, and they’re excited to share what worked for them with you. So they cast a net of social media content, with the intent of reaching their target audience – their ideal client. You may or may not be part of that but still see the messages.

But here’s what I want you to hear – YOU have to decide if you are the ideal client as much as the coach or consultant does. Just because an idea is fab doesn’t mean it’s right for YOU or right for you RIGHT NOW.

Vim & Vigor is only eight months old as of this recording and I still seek advice about next steps. It’s good to seek wise counsel and whether my business is 8 months old or 8 years old, I will always seek wise counsel.

Here’s what happened to me and what’s prompted this episode.

In the last eight months since starting my business, here’s the advice I’ve received (all of it good and useful at the time, but confusing and conflicting when I seek that advice in a silo!):

  • You don’t need a coach – you have everything you need to make Vim & Vigor successful.
  • But I heard a different expert say that a coach without a coach is just a critic.
  • When I created my ideal client and found the perfect picture of a group of people I thought exemplified that, then had a few experts who were also business coaches review my website. One person harshly criticized my ideal client picture because of the way they dressed. See, they didn’t meet her ideal client and since she’d been running a successful business for the last ten years, so I promptly changed my picture and reconstructed my ideal client. You know what? It lasted about two weeks because I realized her ideal client was actual my less than ideal client.
  • Use Linkedin as your primary social media outlet, that is where your client is.
  • Use Pinterest as your primary social media outlet, that is where your client is.
  • Use a Facebook group as your primary social media outlet, that is where your client is.
  • Use Instagram as your primary social media outlet, that is where your client is.
  • You need multiple offers at several price points to stairstep clients to your retainer offer.
  • You need ONE core offer with one lead in.

I could go on and on describing the good, yet conflicting advice I’ve received from very smart, big-hearted, well-meaning people who wanted to help me.

However, it made me feel like if I didn’t follow all the advice, I would be even more stuck. There came a point when I had to take a break from all the expert advice and listen to what needed in my business to make my mission a reality and move the dial toward the vision I have for my business and my life.

And I encourage you to take that break and think about what you want to do as well.

Trust me, the experts will be there when you’re ready to pursue additional advice and guidance. That includes me – I will be here for you when you’re ready.

This goes beyond a quick think as you brush your teeth or rolling a few ideas around in your head as you drive to work or the grocery store.

I want you to consider journaling, taking a long, solo walk, meditating, praying, breathing exercises, and spending more time on a hobby like baking, woodworking reading or activity that brings you joy.

You don’t have to take a huge sabbatical, but I encourage you to take the time you need until you feel satisfied your mind is clear enough to hear and sift through the information that will help you in your business vs. the great stuff that may not be what you need right now.

And when you’re ready, you will be more emotionally and energetically ready to connect with someone who can personally influence you.

alone and frustratedIf you’re feeling anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, angry or even feeling like you’re ready to give up, please take a few deep breaths, close your eyes, and say, “I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to own a business and that I have something valuable that someone else needs. I will find and appreciate that one very special thing about myself that makes me truly unique. And while I commit to taking the advice of experts, I will remember that I too, am an expert over my own business and that my input is the most valuable of all.”
